Cascadia 2018 Schedule

Friday Night, May 4

7:30-10:30 — Evening Dance, Bruce Hamilton

Everyone is welcome; no charge for Cascadia registrants; $12 for others.

Musicians: Julie King (piano), Dave Bartley (fretted things), Betsy Alexander (violin), Betsy Cooper (flute), Fred Nussbaum (cello).

Saturday, May 5

9:30-10:45 — Workshop with David Millstone: Oh, the Places You'll Go!

A mix of dances old and new as warm-ups for the day's work. The program will include some less familiar dances, offering a chance to wake up mentally without tackling anything too physically strenuous early in the day.

Musicians: Dawn Corl (piano), Anne Goess (violin), Charles Coldwell (recorder and flute), Fred Nussbaum (cello).

11:00-12:30 — Workshop with David Millstone: Bumps on the Road

You're dancing merrily along and then comes a jolt. Maybe you need to move more quickly—or more slowly—than anticipated. Musical phrases are odd lengths. Figures cross the phrase. Everyone's moving at once, going in different directions. These dances ask us to pay close attention to reap their rewards.

Musicians: Dawn Corl (piano), Anne Goess (violin), Charles Coldwell (recorder and flute), Fred Nussbaum (cello).

12:30-1:30 — Lunch

1:30-3:00 — Workshop with David Millstone: Lost in Space

Many English country dances fall into familiar patterns: First corners do something, second corners repeat; Ones move and Twos repeat. Everything is comfortable, within normal limits. But then there are those delightful dances—old and new alike—that send us off in unexpected directions. How do we navigate unfamiliar terrain? What landmarks help us stay oriented? How do we help partners and neighbors?

Musicians: Terry Wergeland (piano), Carabeth Wilson (violin), Sande Gillette (violin), Dennis Calvin (oboe).

3:15-4:30 — Workshop with Bruce Hamilton: Who's Here?

We commonly view our fellow dancers in their roles in our set - neighbor, partner, etc. But many of those people are also friends: one volunteers at the shelter, another brings their perspective to committee meetings, another consistently shows up and helps out at dances, etc. When we let those thoughts come to the front, the dancing gets richer.

And there's more. In this workshop we'll explore several ways of thinking about who's in the room, and end the day enjoying dancing with each other.

Since we're focusing on each other, all the dances will be familiar or accessible.

Musicians: Terry Wergeland (piano), Carabeth Wilson (violin), Sande Gillette (violin), Dennis Calvin (oboe).

4:30-8:00 — Dinner Break

8:00-11:00 — Dance Party, David Millstone

We encourage you to dress up for the Saturday night dance, but it's not a ball. Dress to have a fun evening!

Musicians: Roger Nelson (piano), Karen Iglitzin (violin), Ruthie Dornfeld (violin), Laurie Andres (accordian).

Sunday, May 6

10:00-11:30 — Workshop with David Millstone: We Travel Together

In the exciting whirlwind of heys and double figure-eights and ever more convoluted figures, let's remember the power of that simplest of gestures, an extended hand. In this session, we'll explore how physical connection lets us work together to sculpt the space on our dance floor.

Musicians: Laurie Andres (piano), Olga Hauptman (violin), Marni Rachmiel (flute), Marianne Tatom (clarinet).

11:40-1:00 — Final Dance Party with David and Bruce

The last dance of a fabulous weekend. This is your chance to say goodbye to old and new friends and enjoy the last dances of the weekend with all your partners.

Musicians: Laurie Andres (piano), Olga Hauptman (violin), Marni Rachmiel (flute), Marianne Tatom (clarinet).
